Placing a Porta Potty on the Mendocino Coast: Wind, Rain and Salt Air

Coast sites from Westport to Gualala share three problems: afternoon northwest wind, months of winter rain and soft ground. Here's how we set units so they stay upright, level and pleasant to use.

Which way should a porta potty door face on the coast?

Face the door away from the prevailing northwest wind, which on most Mendocino Coast sites means toward the south or east. A door facing into the wind slams, lets rain in and blows paper around. Turning the unit also keeps any odor downwind of guests and neighbors.

On a narrow lot we may have to compromise. In that case we add a door spring check and place the unit where a fence, house or hedge breaks the wind.

Do porta potties need to be staked down near the ocean?

Porta potties on open bluffs, headlands and meadows should be staked or strapped. A light, empty unit can tip in a strong gust before it fills. Units tucked against a building or in trees usually stay put without anchors. We bring stakes and straps for any coast site described as open.

  • Open headland or meadow: stake both sides
  • Next to a building or fence: strap to a fixed post if available
  • Paved lot: weighted base or strap to a bollard

How do you keep a porta potty level in winter mud?

Set the unit on firm ground or a plywood pad at least as large as its base. Coast soil softens quickly from November through April, and a unit that sinks on one side leaks, rocks and will not latch. Avoid low spots where water collects after storms.

If the only reachable spot is soft, we lay a pad and check level at the first service visit.

How far from a cliff edge should a porta potty sit?

Keep a porta potty well back from any bluff or cliff edge, on ground that is clearly stable, and never on the seaward side of a fence or warning sign. Coastal bluffs erode and crack. We will not set a unit in a spot our driver thinks is unsafe, and we will pick a safer spot nearby.

Will salt air damage a rented porta potty?

Salt air does not harm the plastic shell of a porta potty. It can corrode metal hinges and latches over time, which is our job to maintain. If a latch sticks on your rental, call and we fix it at the next service.
